To use an otoscope, gently pull the patient's ear upward and backward, insert the otoscope speculum into the ear canal, and look through the lens to examine the ear canal and eardrum. To use an ophthalmoscope, darken the room, set the lens to zero, and look through the device while moving close to the patient's eye to inspect the retina and other internal structures of the eye.
